Teacher Sheila Hester wants to serve students in the classroom. She also wants to support teachers in the wider educational community.
For a time, Hester left the classroom so that she could focus on helping other educators. She missed working directly with students every day, though.
So, after working as a curriculum coordinator at an elementary school and as a member of an assessment team based in Central Office, she returned to the classroom. For the past nine years, she has been teaching fifth grade at Whitaker Elementary School.
Now, thanks to a new initiative called the Teacher Leadership Academy, Hester and others will be able to stay in the classroom while serving other teachers.
“It’s really that we are helping each other with one common goal – helping the children,” Hester said. Read more.
Winston-Salem Journal: Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools looks to improve third-grade literacy with new program

Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools has worked for years to improve the reading scores of its third-graders with little success.
The district is hoping a new program, approved by its board Tuesday night, will give the system better results.
Education Resource Group (ERG) will provide several days of training to all third-grade teachers and up to 20 district leaders, in the next two months. There will be a follow-up with the teachers in May to evaluate the program.
The district has a goal of having 90 percent of third-graders reading on grade-level by 2020. Rusty Hall, an instructional superintendent for the school system, said he hopes this program will help get the system on track. Read more.
