New Kids at Bailey Power Plant
Here we are. Finally settled in at Bailey Power Plant.
Our small but efficient offices are set up and we are basking in the variety of workspaces.
New Work Flow
Since our spaces are separated, we are learning a new work flow and having to be intentional about times to connect on important topics. This may sound obvious, but in our old work space, the three of us were all in the same room. All day, everyday. We could spontaneously report on projects, draft emails aloud to get editing advice, and be present for all phone calls.
In our new spaces, things have shifted. We have our individual spaces to create, develop, research, read, and conduct daily tasks.
For the things that involve all of us and for communication purposes, we meet a few mornings a week in one of the larger spaces to keep everyone updated and everything transparent.
New Friends
Not only have we found new spaces and new ways of working, but we also have met a few new friends as we settled in. Alice’s office is across from Hasani Mitchell of Access Center for Equity + Success, and Karen Barnes of the Venture Café has also stopped by to say hello. Convenient, right?!
Our floor-mates include lawyers, insurance companies, online bookkeepers, and software developers. On the other side of our building is the clinical research company Javara and a worldwide sockmaker, Renfro. And of course we are fast friends with Ms. Lilly, who keeps the front desk secure, and K, who not only keeps the building in tip-top shape, but also is quite the cook!
Answering questions about the work we do, the customers we serve, and how it all impacts students and teachers has been just what we needed to get a little extra pep in our step.
New Ideas
The change of venue and reworking of how we internally do business has had an unexpected result. We are full of new ideas. Cleaning out the old and ushering in the new has been a renewal process for ERG. It’s true that moving out of your comfort zone can really be a productive thing. Our thinking has expanded as part of this move and having a new physical context has helped us zoom out from the work we do, consider what needs refining, and look towards what we can offer in the coming years.
Being the new kids has not been too bad. Aside from Alice having a small incident with the phone transfer, Kaitlyn missing a delivery, and a day where we all got soaked walking to and from the parking deck, we love our new address. If you are in the neighborhood, be sure stop by and say hi!
