Citizenship in the Virtual World

From the desk of Leigh Ann . . .

Technology has provided wonderful opportunities for learning autonomy.  The dramatic increase of online resources, network services, educational software, and quality learning games are creating great new opportunities for self-directed learning.  Developments in mobile technology and the explosion in social media have accelerated students’ interest, so it is essential that we prepare our children for digital citizenship in the virtual world. There are countless benefits to these resources as long as we use them appropriately, so teaching the foundation for responsible online life is a must.

One hands-on way to get children involved in making common sense choices in the digital world is to visit Digital Passport by Common Sense Media.  This free website for schools teaches and tests the basics of online life in a kid friendly environment.  Teachers can register and set their students on the path to learning modules exploring digital citizenship, privacy issues, cyber bullying, your digital footprint, forming secure passwords, and tech etiquette.  Check it out here:  https://www.digitalpassport.org/educator-registration

Our children are becoming glued to technology at younger ages and with greater frequency.  Technology provides a wonderful way to accommodate student diversity and it is essential that we coach our students in the proper ways to use these tools effectively for greater learning outcomes.  Making safe and appropriate choices, knowing the right times for social media, thinking before posting, and being aware of one’s digital footprint are important points for students to examine as they build strong foundations for online living.  It is vital that we explicitly teach our students how to be responsible citizens in the digital world in which they are living.
